Anna Poel
MWC School Counselor
Hello parents and families!
I really enjoy working with the students and staff at MWC and look forward to another year! I started in my role in the Highland School District in 2017. I hold a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Washington and have my independent clinical license. I have work experience in affordable housing, social services, after-school programs, school counseling, among others. I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri, but made my way out to the Yakima Valley in 2012. In my free time I love to hike, camp, run, and eat ice cream! My mission is to treat all students with dignity and respect, to build emotional regulation and social problem-solving skills, and be proactive in securing a safe, challenging, and rewarding education for all.
What is my role?
I teach classroom lessons using the Second Step Curriculum on topics such as calming down techniques, problem solving, and how to address bullying.
I lead small groups for students who need extra support in areas such as social skills, emotion regulation, family changes, anxiety, impulse control, and more.
Finally, I will be available to any student or parent that has concerns about social and emotional well-being, including academic concerns.

In addition to Second Step Curriculum, we also use Zones of Regulation as a method of students becoming self-aware of their emotions and having tools to get back to the GREEN zone!
Please do not hesitate to reach out if I can support any houeshold or resource needs your family has!
